Capture the magic to sell a story with great photography

August 21, 2010

An author, either established or new to the business of writing, will be looking to sell their books once they have completed their work. Some authors and their publishers choose to use illustrations on the front of their novels but others, who use photography, are wise to choose a professional commercial photographer to produced the required picture. For works of non-fiction, photographs are often the preferred choice.

Working with a commercial photographer will ensure the atmosphere that the author and the publisher are trying to capture becomes a reality. Writers want an eye-catching photo on the cover of a book to cause their book to leap off the shelves and into the laps of readers. The photographer has the technical ability, people skills, creative talent and access to the required equipment, to make any book’s photo shoot a success. The professional photographer is an expert at using light, props and colour to produce the desired effect, whether it is food photography for a recipe book, a roomset photographer for a book on interior design or any number of photography skills required.

Having a professional photographer work on a book cover gives the author and the publisher the opportunity to focus on details and to communicate with their buyers on an instinctive level. For the reader the cover of a book is like visual shorthand. The commercial photographer will use his knowledge and skill to produce a photograph that will intrigue and tempt the potential reader to choose their client’s, the author’s, book from the shelf.

The commercial photographer in Leeds should be ‘in tune’ with the message the author, his or her client, is trying to convey.
