Behind the shot

Tony Lendill: We shot this as part of a series of shoots to appear in JJB’s Spring/Summer running catalogue. The problem was we needed to shoot in November and if you recall, we had a lot of snow and frost around this time. It makes scheduling tricky with photographer, assistants and models on standby, but that’s the reality of location photography outdoors in the UK.
We reccied half a dozen locations before finding a secluded part of the Yorkshire dales near Appletreewick, and not too far for a Leeds commercial photographer. About 5 minutes walk from the shoot location was a local cafe – essential for keeping everyone’s spirits up on what turned out to be a very cold day. Making a note of where the sun would be when shooting, I fired off a few test shots for reference and approval from the client.
The final shot is a composition of two shots. The first is a background image, shot earlier in the day just when we got a break in cloud to let through some blue sky. This meant we could just focus on getting the models in the right position/pose, and saved a lot of time. With a tight deadline to meet, we couldn’t afford a re-shoot.
Back at the studio, the two images were comped together and then the retouching begins. It’s great to have these skills as a photographer, as it gives you much more control over the final shot.
