English Heritage caught up in another photography furore

July 18, 2011

English Heritage has once again caused uproar in the UK amateur and commercial photography community from Leeds to Leicester after demanding a man pay £100 after he took a self portrait in front of Carlisle Castle.

Robert Reid, 74 had planned to send the image to a car magazine after he posed in front of his car on the driveway of the Castle. However he was approached by a security guard who told him he was trespassing and required a permit to take the photo.

“I wasn’t moving,” Reid said ‘I told her I’d done National Service with the Border Regiment in the Castle.’

He went on: “It’s ridiculous that a citizen of Carlisle can’t take a photo in front of the castle. I thought I was going to end up in the dungeon.”

A spokesman from English Heritage did admit this was a mistake stating:

“A staff member did incorrectly inform Mr Reid that he could not take a picture on site. It was a mistake. There was some confusion. We are sorry for the inconvenience and frustration this has caused. Members of the public are free to take pictures for personal use.”

Last October, English Heritage was forced to apologise following an email they sent to the online photo library fotoLibra regarding the usage of Stonehenge images that were on its site. The email stated that any photos of Stonehenge used for commercial purposes had to be directed through English Heritage.
