Commercial photography – digital vs. film

Imagine what it was like, not so long ago, for commercial photographers who used roll after roll of camera film for one photography shoot. It’s hard to believe but not that long ago digital cameras were virtually unheard of. How long ago? Well it was 1999 when major newspapers in the US stopped using film and converted completely to digital. This means it was less than 15 years ago that your average commercial photographer still relied on film. (more…)

Welsh commercial photographer’s near miss

A Welsh commercial photographer’s image has been chosen as the cover of the Lonely Planet India 30th anniversary edition. The photo was of Mumbai’s Darbar Sahib or Golden Temple. However, the image had a rather significant story behind it as it was taken shortly before the Mumbai terrorist attacks in November 2008. (more…)

Major commercial photography festival in West Yorkshire

As the home of the National Medium Museum and Impressions Gallery, Bradford would seem the ideal location to host a brand new photography festival – Ways of Looking. This month long festival that kicks off in October will feature exhibitions at eight different venues showcasing some of the country’s best contemporary and commercial photographers across the West Yorkshire City. Pack shot photography in marketing materials

Advertising, brochures, websites, press releases and catalogues – all common methods used by retailers to market their products. Their other common thread is that these retailers’ marketing materials would often use pack shot photography to promote their product range. The main benefit of using pack shot photography is the versatility of the image. Swinging sixties commercial photographer’s new exhibition

Rarely seen images by legendary commercial photographer Patrick Lichfield will go on display at London’s Chris Beetles Fine Photographs gallery later this year. Lichfield, who died in 2005, was most famed for his work during the swinging sixties, and frequently photographed the royal family as the first cousin of the Queen and fifth earl of Lichfield. One of his most famous works was that of a naked Marsha Hunt, a model and actress who appeared in the musical Hair in 1968. The iconic image was one of the most famous photographs of the 1960s. Degas – a champion of early commercial photography?

A new exhibition celebrating the work of the 19th century French impressionist artist – Edgar Degas, looks to dispel the myth that he was not merely just a painter of ballerinas. ‘Degas and the Ballet: Picturing Movement’, which opens on 17 September focuses on the artist’s preoccupation with movement and suggests his work was inspired by new art forms at the time such as photography and film. Fujifilm re-enters the instant photography market

Fujifilm has re-launched its instant camera range – known as Instax. The range features four models, three Instax Minis which produce wallet sized 62mm x 46mm photos and the Instax 210 which prints 62mm x 99mm photos. (more…)
