How to become a catalogue photographer

June 28, 2009

Photography is an enjoyable and creative hobby for many of us but there are also some exciting and well-paid professional opportunities to consider if you are a passionate and hard-working photographer. Catalogue photography is currently an important area in this market and whilst it is a very competitive area, there are still some vacancies available if you have the skills and determination. There is more demand for this type of commercial photographer in Leeds, Manchester, London and other major cities; many catalogue photographers will work on a freelance basis and travel to work.

The main objective of a catalogue photographer is to create photographs that promote and help sell a product, service or brand. What is featured in the photographs can vary extensively and will depend on the company you are working for, what they are selling and how they want it to be represented. These types of photographs are important and so the role of a lifestyle photographer is a significant one.

Often the best route to becoming a catalogue photographer can be working as an assistant first. This offers great experience and knowledge. However, there are also some qualifications that can be beneficial for those interested in this area of work. NVQ/SVQs, degrees and other training qualifications may be helpful too. A catalogue photographer needs to have an eye for detail, know about the use of colours and lighting, and have a sound knowledge of the technical side of cameras and other necessary equipment. Being confident, hard-working, creative and having great social and communicative skills are just some of the qualities of a good catalogue photographer.
