How to do underwater photography

August 14, 2009

It is possible for some amazing photographs to be taken that can show us what is going on underwater. These images often feature in magazines or billboards and are usually taken by a commercial photographer as part of an advertising campaign. Specialist equipment is often used in commercial photography in order to capture such spectacular shots but it is possible for amateur and keen photographers who don’t have a lot of experience and expensive photography equipment to also take some photographs underwater.

A camera made specifically for underwater use is necessary. These cameras don’t have to be expensive and can provide great results. Make sure you are familiar with the camera, its capabilities and how it works before you begin.

Practice is important when learning to photograph underwater. It doesn’t matter if you are in Leeds instead of the tropical paradise you are planning to visit, go to your local swimming pool or other places with water nearby to gain experience. The results of underwater photography are not always perfect but this can increase the likelihood that you will have some photographs to be proud of.

You should also try to find the clearest water in the area so that your photographs will be clear and of a good quality. Move around and improvise to try and help the clarity in the photographs for better results.

It is important to remain as still as possible for photography and this is also of great importance when photographing underwater. Try to take your shots when you are floating, balanced or moving at a slow pace.

Photographing underwater successfully is not an easy thing to do but with a bit of thought, the right camera and a bit of practice you will be able to capture amazing underwater photographs even without the equipment a commercial photographer uses.
