Personalise your Google page with photography

June 15, 2010

Following closely in the wake of National Photography Month, Google has unveiled an exciting new functionality. Picassa is a free download from Google that allows creative photographers to edit, organise and share their photos with friends and family. Using Picassa, Google propose that users be able to personalise their Google homepage with their own photograph, whether the picture is a personal snapshot or an image taken by a professional commercial photographer, they can be uploaded and shared.

A link will be added to the bottom left hand side of the Google home page, which will allow a photograph to be uploaded, meaning Google can be personalised. Pictures will be uploaded either from a Picasa album, a public Picassa gallery or from the user’s own computer and, if the user changes their mind, they will be able to easily switch between their new home screen and the classic, white version of Google or upload a different photograph.

Should photographers choose to try this potential trend they may like to share their uploaded photo with Google by posting a screen shot to Twitter, tagged with #myGooglepage.

It remains to be seen how popular this new proposal will be, but feedback so far has been positive.

As the popularity of photograph uploading continues to increase, the future of Picassa Web Albums looks secure and Google remains as popular as ever. The use of commercial photographers is also increasing as companies everywhere look to ensure their brand stands out from the rest and this new feature could well be incorporated by companies to allow customers to use their images as a marketing tool.
