Photograph of Leeds lamp post wins student top prize
August 16, 2009
A photograph featuring a lamp post and a wall covered in graffiti was the chosen image selected by the judges in the photography competition held by SkyShot. This image was captured in the city of Leeds by Paul Phung a student at Leeds College of Art & Design.
Harvey Nichols and UNITE contributed to the organisation of the competition and itreceived a lot of interest from keen photographers. Around 179 different photographers all entered their images for consideration. The competition was held as part of the opening celebrations for a new property owned by UNITE called SkyPlaza and drew much attention from Leeds locals.
Students in the city of Leeds were encouraged to get and about in their local areas of the city and photograph what they saw and found of interest and significance for Leeds. Paul’s shot of the lamp post won the votes of the judges and was awarded top position in the competition. Paul’s prize was £500 and other finalists also received monetary rewards.
The judges were thrilled with many photography entries received in this competition and really struggled to decide on the winner because so many photographs were of good quality.
Competitions like this demonstrate and display the fantastic talent of many photographers in Leeds. Working as commercial photographers, catalogue photographers, fashion photographers and in many other highly competitive areas of photography is certainly not an easy role and photography competitions help to highlight the skill involved.
