Photographing clothes in catalogue photography

August 28, 2009

Any form of commercial photography requires skill, knowledge, patience and the appropriate equipment. The photographing of clothes to feature in a catalogue can be particularly tricky. In order to be a successful commercial photographer that works efficiently with clothes and creates effective shots of them, you must work closely with a stylist in order to produce good results.

The first thing that may be considered when photographing clothes for a catalogue is the space to be used. The size of the area is an obvious factor to take into consideration. Make sure that all the equipment you require is available and will fit comfortably in this area. Equipment will be necessary for the set, for the lighting and for the styling.

The lighting is of great importance and without effective lighting the right shots will not be produced. Even if an item has been styled well, if the photograph does not capture it in the right light then the item will not be displayed at its best. Therefore, the photograph is less likely to appeal to potential customers and encourage them to buy it. It is finding the right lighting and using the various necessary tools to do so that can really take the time and prove the challenge when photographing clothes. However, once the right light has been found, this will help in the production of similar shots too.

Taking photographs of clothes in catalogue photography can be a difficult task. It is necessary to work with the stylist and of course the client to make sure that the images you are creating are showing the item at its very best and also portraying it in the way that the client wants it to be viewed. Commercial photographers are working creatively and successfully throughout the UK, especially in the large cities such as Leeds and London. Using their skills, knowledge and experience they are capturing the very best shots of clothing and using these images as an effective tool in commercial campaigns.
