Photography: Colour me pretty
August 18, 2010
Professional commercial photographers know there is more to photography than just taking a photograph; not only does the professional commercial photographer possess the required technical ‘know-how’ but he or she also has tremendous artistic ability and knowledge.
First and foremost the commercial photographer understands how colour works which allows him or her to create compositions; such compositions conjure a variety of different feelings and emotions. For instance, a catalogue photographer on a photo shoot knows that green, mauve and blue are introverted colours and will produce a very different feel compared to their brighter counterparts. To induce a feeling of calm and tranquility the commercial photographer may take a photograph of a field of lavender whereas should he or she choose to use vibrant oranges, reds and pinks a more lively feeling will be produced. The commercial photographer can expertly arrange a composition to accommodate the mood that their client is seeking.
Using contrasting colours can also produce an excellent effect. Primary colours such as blue and yellow work well side-by-side, or using one as a background and the other as a main subject. Yellow gives a feeling of energy that can be balanced with the calmness of blue.
The professional commercial photographer in Leeds and other cities throughout the UK thinks about the feeling and the atmosphere that the client wishes to generate in a finished image. Part of this process is taking time to think about the colours to be used in the photo shoot.
