Prison setting for new photography exhibition
July 27, 2009
A very different location has been chosen for a new art exhibition in Leeds and it is creating mixture of interest, curiosity and praise. Armley Prison, Leeds has been chosen as the perfect setting to display the photography exhibition ‘Comings and Goings’ which features the work of photographer Casey Orr.
The large canvases that make up the collection feature photographs exploring the idea of community and migration in Leeds. The photographs have been placed on walls on both the inside and outside of HMP Leeds, and Casey has photographed prisoners and their families in an attempt to bring the prisoners and the community outside of the prison a little closer. She has also photographed many women who have migrated to the UK and shows them with the local nature, such as flowers and animals that reside in the area. Casey has also chosen to feature birds from all over the world in her photographs and hopes that all of these photographs combined will help people to consider the areas in which they live, the nature within these areas and the communities around them and how they are constantly developing and changing.
This exhibition is attracting people from all backgrounds and with all levels of photography skill. It promises to be an interesting and entertaining visit for those who don’t really know a lot about photography and even for professionals, such as commercial photographers.
This exhibition opened on 2nd July 2009 and will be at Armley Prison until 31st August. It will then be transferred to Leeds Museum where it will be on display from October 2009 to December 2009.
