Sport in motion – capturing the sporty shot
June 3, 2010
Taking photos of athletes in action requires a combination of technical ability, stamina and creativity. Sportsmen and women can embark on extraordinary challenges, which may require a commercial photographer to travel to events and employ extra equipment, such as high spec zoom lenses.
Although their travel may be to exotic, or even dangerous, locations to photograph extreme sports enthusiasts, the sports photographer’s services may also be required closer to home. A commercial photographer in Leeds might be required to capture action shots during football matches, or the local running club embarking on a race, for example.
The creative photographer talks to their clients to ensure they understand what photographs are required and how their client wants to use the finished result. This enables them to fully prepare for the shoot.
On the day of the event, sports photographers pay attention to the light and where it is coming from, as, there may be tricky weather conditions, like pouring rain or very bright sunshine to contend with. They have infinite patience while waiting for the action shot and the ability to move quickly when it arrives. The commercial photographer is always ready, taking shots before during and after the main event, they might also include cheerful spectators or the surrounding venue.
Sports photography takes patience, dedication and commitment; it’s not easy to capture footballers dribbling skills, or a surfer catching waves. The commercial photographers that go to the greatest lengths, with real passion, produce the most outstanding photographs.
