The art of composition
June 27, 2010
Creative composition is the key to taking outstanding photographs. Whether based in Yorkshire or Yeovil, or somewhere inbetween, all professional commercial photographers need the right camera, conditions and film to take a photo and an expert eye for composition can turn that photo into an award winning one. They compose the perfect photograph by following some simple steps.
Primarily the photographer speaks with their client to establish a clear outline of what the photo is to be about and what the main subject will be. Once this has been decided they will then focus the attention of the photo there. For instance, if photographing a birthday party the photographer could either focus on the person whose birthday is being celebrated or capture a picture of the whole group attending the party. If they ensure that everyone is looking at the person whose birthday it is, then they won’t lose the focus of the picture. When thinking about composing their shot, the professional creative photographer also considers whether vertical shots could be the ideal choice or another alternative choice of angle.
Finally photographers must also consider what to leave in the frame and what to cut out. They remove anything that isn’t the main subject of their shot or is drawing attention away from the main subject. The background can either be blurred out or the camera moved so that the offending clutter isn’t in shot, and there you have it, a commercial photographer can expertly produce the client’s perfect photograph.
