The art of photographing buildings
July 30, 2010
Many commercial photographers have experience of architectural pictures and are therefore full of tips on the subject and tricks of the trade.
Creative commercial photographers know how to use light to their advantage. Given a choice they like to capture photographs when light is at is best, either in the late afternoon or first thing in the morning. They know that there is better colour to be found in the sky at these times, and they want a remarkable backdrop to their pictures. Although, photographing images in the midday sun can wash the tones out of the photographer’s pictures, on the other hand, in bright sun the photographer can capture the dramatic contrast between sunlight and shadow.
To alter the viewpoint, rather than taking a picture of the whole building the photographer might try photographing the building from a kneeling position or from a small ladder and he or she may take several photographer to give them the best chance of capturing the quality image they seek.
If a photographer wants to capture contemporary buildings, they try to find graphically interesting structures in order to do so. The commercial photographer in Leeds might try to capture a photograph of the Leeds Millennium Square, and he or she may also find science buildings, museums and libraries interesting subjects.
Whether they are capturing photographs for an advertising campaign or marketing materials or for their own personal enjoyment, it is only natural that a creative photographer be interested in other artistic mediums such as architecture and design along with their passion for photography.
