The basics of food photography
August 18, 2009
If you are a keen photographer and are interested in possibly becoming a food photographer and working in a city like Leeds or London, there are some basic and key things that you must first consider and understand.
The first tip that you must do is learn about food. If you are already a fan of food and take an interest in what foods are available and what you eat than you are already half way there with this. However, it is still a good idea to become acquainted with some less well known foods that you may not have encountered before. A genuine interest and knowledge will make this job easier.
You must also make sure that you are familiar with different lighting techniques involved in photography. Practice with the equipment you have and see what different images you can capture and how these are affected by the differences in light. This is an important part in all areas of photography and especially in commercial photography so can be very beneficial.
It is also important that you begin to view food that you eat and food that you photograph in different ways. The appearance of the two will vary greatly. Note from the food around you what looks good from a photographic point and also what does not.
When you have begun to notice food that looks good in photographs and food that does not, play around with the things that you have learned in order to create different and explorative images. Begin to vary the colours, the accessories, the angles of the photograph and other variables that may make an image of food really stand out, which is important for food photography.
