Photographs of children can work effectively as part of an advertising campaign for products and services appropriate for that age group and images like this regularly feature in magazines, billboards and on related products too.

Being able to capture photographs of these children when they are comfortable and relaxed in a controlled but natural looking environment is therefore an important part of lifestyle photography and something a professional commercial photographer must learn and practice.

Preparation is important when photographing children in lifestyle photography. Try to begin the session in an environment with which they are familiar with and therefore will likely feel comfortable and confident a little easier. After the children begin to feel more comfortable, new locations for photographs can be tried in order to achieve the desired commercial shots.Â Ensure that you spend some time chatting and interacting with the children and their parents before you begin taking any lifestyle photographs.

Children react differently when they are being photographed for a commercial campaign and so in order to work successfully as a lifestyle photographer it is necessary to talk, listen and react to each child accordingly. Help them to feel comfortable, be patient, give them advice and capture any appropriate moments that they offer you without you always trying to control them and the situation.
