Tips for food photography
June 24, 2009
Food photography can be a fun and creative project to take on but can also be quite difficult. Photographing food is a large and successful part of commercial photography because of the many uses it has in society today. A food photographer may produce shots of food for advertisements, cookbooks and packaging and therefore the photographs must be of the highest quality and display the food appropriately. Food photography is an important part of commercial photography with commercial photographers in Leeds and Yorkshire having senior contracts with large corporations.
When trying to take a photograph of food, an important factor to consider is the presentation of the dish you want to shoot. How the food is displayed, the positioning, the colour and the amount of food shown can have a big impact on the quality of the photograph taken.
The lighting used is also important in food photography. By planning your lighting carefully, certain parts of the dish can be highlighted or hidden and the correct environment and atmosphere to suit the dish and the photograph can be created. It may be necessary to play around with the lighting a little bit before you get it just right.
Considering your position and the angle of the camera is also necessary when photographing food. Most photographs of food are taken from close range but the altering of angles and position slightly can make a big difference. Again, trial and error with your position can be beneficial in food photography.
