Tips for how to photograph a cake
July 7, 2009
Food photography is an art in its own right and cakes are a particularly popular item in this photography category.
The design and creation techniques used in cake-making have really developed over recent years and this means that some extremely beautiful and intricate cakes are now being baked all around the world. Along with the classic cakes that will always be admired, these cakes are also something that attracts much attention and interest.
There are many reasons why cakes like this are photographed, for example at a wedding or if taken by a commercial photographer to feature in a catalogue, flyer, advert, recipe book or other marketing material. Food photography plays a very important role in advertising and marketing campaigns and cakes are often a photographed object.
When you photograph a cake, you must first ensure that it looks the best that it can possibly look. Ensure it has been finished and decorated appropriately and that any accessories have been added. Professional food photographers consider the area around the cake such as the type of stand it is displayed on, the background that will feature in the photograph and the colours that will be captured in the shot must all be considered.
Lighting is also very important. Trial and error and a bit of creativity will help you find the best possible light for your photograph. Finally, the positioning of the camera must be explored. By trying different angles and moving around you will be able to capture many different images of your cake and will then be able to choose the very best. Be creative and try shots from above the cake, from the side and vary the distance too.
