UK Teenager wins Veolia Environnement Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year

November 6, 2009

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards recently took place; competition was fierce this year with the competition receiving more entries than ever and the photographs entered in the competition being of an incredibly high standard. There were around 43,000 entries in total and entrants from 93 countries took part. The majority of wildlife photographs were from photographers in the UK and USA but an impressive increase of entries came from Russia and China. Competition organisers and Veolia Environnement, sponsors of this event, have been delighted with the increased level of interest in the awards this year.

A teenager from the UK was announced as winner of the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards 2009. The photograph titled ‘clash of the yellowhammers’ was judged to be the winning photograph in this category this year and the young photographer is Fergus Gill who lives in Scotland. This photograph features two yellowhammers fighting over oats that had been placed in feeders by Fergus. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Fergus and for the UK as this is the second year in a row that this competition has been won by a British teenager.

The winner of the Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year award was José Luis Rodriguez for his photograph featuring an Iberian wolf.

It is possible for stunning images of wildlife to be captured in photographs and images like this are often used in commercial photography. If you are not an experienced photographer and are not able to capture successful images of wildlife like some of those captured by entrants in this competition, it can be hugely beneficial to work with a professional commercial photographer, especially if these images are for commercial purposes. A commercial photographer in Leeds, Manchester and other cities in the UK will be able to use their skill, knowledge and equipment to create effective shots of wildlife.
