Underwater photography – pushing the limits

July 12, 2010

Under the ocean waves is a whole other world. One where beautiful colors and striking fish come together to provide outstanding photograph opportunities. Venturing underwater means entering another environment, the main difference between this world and our own is that the medium thorough which light travels is water rather than air. When a professional commercial photographer is employed to take underwater photographs it may be for a billboard, a book or an advertising campaign.

The professional commercial photographer will have special techniques and specialist equipment to help them to capture great underwater images. They also ensure they have good training and safe procedures in place to ensure their safety in not compromised in their pursuit of fascinating underwater shots.

If a professional commercial photographer from Leeds had to sum up the issues with shooting underwater he or she would no doubt raise the limitations of such a pursuit. Not only are travel and communication below the surface of the water limited but natural light and visibility are also restricted, even time is sometimes inadequate, since we, as humans, need to rise to the surface to breathe air.

Taking photographs underwater is a very specialised area and because of this few photographers attempt it. This can mean rewarding results for the photographer who does choose to embark on underwater photography, as he or she is likely to find new and possibly unseen images. Photographers often find that they receive a rewarding response in respect of their pictures as people are fascinated by images from places they don’t see in their day-to-day lives.
