Walking on the wild side – wildlife photography

July 18, 2010

Wildlife photography is about getting great photographs of animals and nature. Professional commercial photographers know that in order to achieve stunning photographs of wildlife they need to be patient, their plans may not always work out but when they do, spectacular results can be produced.

It is possible to find a large variety of animals, birds, mammals, amphibian, reptiles and fish at local Zoological parks. For instance, the commercial photographer in Yorkshire might visit Flamingo Land, as this zoo, being concerned with conservation, has enclosures for the animals which replicate their wild environment and viewing areas and can allow the commercial photographer to capture pictures without any fencing spoiling the shot.

If on the other hand the commercial photographer is going to try and capture pictures of animals in the wild they realise that this may involve a combination of getting dirty, dusty and wet, or all three, and will require a large amount of patience.

The commercial photographer pursuing shots of lions in Africa for an advertising campaign knows first and foremost that he or she needs to blend with nature and camouflage his or her self. Next, the photographer sets up their very long zoom lens so as to be able to take photographs without being so close to wildlife that they scare the subject – and then they sit and wait.

Having set up their equipment they move in for the shot and taking as many photographs as possible can help the commercial photographer get the shot they are looking for, but that is all they take, only photographs and they leave nothing behind but footprints.
