What is lifestyle photography?

June 30, 2009

Lifestyle photography is all around us every day and yet most of us will not even realize we are looking at it. If you walk down a street in a city such as Leeds you will see numerous images taken by a lifestyle photographer as lifestyle photography has become such a significant part of the commercial photography market in society today.

Lifestyle photography refers to any photographs that are taken of a real life situation. However, these photographs are not just taken at the spur of the moment and are not taken by chance. These real life situations are actually created in a very controlled environment with a distinct purpose in mind. A lifestyle photographer often works on advertising and marketing campaigns, using lifestyle photographs to help promote and advertise a brand.

Due to the type pf photographs created in lifestyle photography, they are often used to represent a brand rather than sell an individual product. This is because of the amount of information and the way it is displayed in an image taken by a lifestyle photographer. Often the focus on a particular image can be easily lost. For example, catalogue photographers will often create a lifestyle photograph for the front cover of a catalogue to provoke interest from a potential customer and to show them some of the items available for them to buy in action. Lifestyle photographs will often also feature throughout a catalogue but will be used fairly sparingly and more so to add entertainment and an atmosphere to the products rather than to sell the products themselves.

Lifestyle photography is very important in marketing and advertising as it can help sell an idea and attitude about a certain brand. This is very important when establishing and maintaining a customer base and so using the right lifestyle photographer for your business is vital.
