What it takes to become a food photographer

September 24, 2009

Food photography is an exciting part of commercial photography that appeals to many creative photographers. The job of a food photographer involves the photographing of food for commercial purposes. These photographs may feature in magazines, recipe books, billboards, menus and flyers and can be a very significant part of an advertising campaign. Becoming a food photographer requires a lot of skill, knowledge and practice.

Having a background in photography is a good place to start if you are hoping to become a food photographer. This sort of history will provide you with the general skills and knowledge needed to take a great photograph but it is also important that a food photographer has gained the necessary food styling knowledge and experience too. Whilst many commercial food photographers use a food stylist for the preparation and arrangement of the food, it is beneficial if you are a food photographer to have these skills yourself.

Many food photographers have previously worked as commercial photographers or have worked in jobs styling or preparing food. However, when looking to begin working as a food photographer it can be worthwhile to firstly work as an assistant to an already established and successful food photographer. This way you can gain valuable knowledge and experience whilst actually working with clients and photographing food. There are many highly experienced food photographers working in the UK, especially in Leeds, London and other cities.

In order to work successfully in food photography you have to have photography experience and knowledge about food and the styling of it can also be advantageous. It is also necessary that you have sound business skills, money to invest and professional photography equipment if you really want to succeed working in food photography.
